    Blondes everywhere know that Violet and Blue shampoos can help maintain salon blonde hair for longer, keeping the tone fresh and vibrant and eliminating the chance of yellow or orange tones appearing.

    But how do they work? Let’s go back to school and art lessons where we learnt about colours and how the interact with each other by enhancing or neutralising.

    All colours have the capability of neutralising their opposites. If, for example you have green hair and wanted to neutralise it, the opposite of green is red. If you apply a red colour over green hair, you don’t get red hair, you get something neutral, depending on how light or dark the colours used are it will create a muted brown.

    When it comes to blondes, the lighter the salon colour, the paler the violet needs to be to help maintain a clean blonde, likewise, the darker the blonde is the more deeper the violet ior blue needs to be to help neutralise the unwanted tones.

    Naturally it isn’t as simple as the colour wheel above suggests, but the one below gives a clearer idea of how complex and precise anti yellow shampoo needs to be to be able to work on different levels and tones of blonde. And whilst this image relates to colour in a broader spectrum, the principles are the same for everything.

    Wherever you are as you read this blog, on a sunny island in The Bahamas, a snowy landscape in The Nordics, or somewhere where the weather changes daily, one thing is certain, the weather, no matter what, is potentially damaging your hair.

    Sun: harmful UVA and UVB rays strip out natural moisture from the internal structure, which makes hair look dull and lifeless, plus colour can fade significantly.

    Wind: As the wind wraps itself around your hair it can open up the cuticle layer creating a halo of frizz. Moisture escapes as well which further increases the internal damage, making hair less responsive and prone to splitting.

    Rain: Surely rain can’t damage your hair? Well it depends whether or not you have protected your hair when styling it, giving you a better chance of hair drying out without risking anything significant occurring. But, if, after getting soaked in a downpour you rough dry your locks there is a potential for causing breakage as hair is more delicate when wet.

    Snow: Well ultimately snow is exactly the same as rain, moisture falling from the sky, so potentially it too can cause damage, even if we don’t want to believe it.

    Whatever the weather, dry, wet, humid, windy, your hair needs as much protection as your skin.

    The Cortex

    This is the inner structure of your hair, protected by the cuticle (see previous blog) and it is where we find all the natural moisture and proteins that gives hair its inner strength and flexibility. The cortex is also where the majority of hair’s natural colour is, and where permanent oxidised colour sits.

    The structure of this internal element is very similar to rope, when healthy it is tightly coiled and incredibly strong.

    But just like rope, over time it can become frayed, and if the cuticle is also damaged, hair begins to suffer.

    When the cortex frays, natural moisture and proteins can escape, weakening hair, making it lifeless, lacking in volume and prone to breakage.

    If we were to continuing fraying the hair, it would resemble string, still fibrous, still coiled, but delicate and easily broken.

    Eventually, the smallest micro fibres of the hair will break down, and at this point hair needs drastic help.

    There is one more part of the hair, ‘the medulla’, not found to be present in all hair types, there are theories as to what the function of the medulla is. Sheep wool has a high medulla content and could be there to help protect against cold as it acts as a thermal layer. However in human hair it serves no purpose and could potentially be nothing more than cells that didn’t make the grade to become cuticle or cortex.

    It’s a complex structure! When we shampoo, condition, style, colour, curl or braid hair we are working with a structure that has multiple components.

    The Cuticle – This is the outside layer of hair, usually between 7 and 10 layers thick depending on the thickness of each individual strand. The cuticle is a protective barrier layer, it is semi transparent and when healthy looks like fish scales or roof tiles, all tightly compacted together. This tight, protection keeps all the internal structure safe and helps give hair its shine and lustre.

    But, it is prone to damage, and that can cause natural moisture and proteins, essential for healthy hair, to escape. Colour can also fade more quickly when the cuticle is damaged.

    Damaged cuticle layers also create a feeling of dryness, and because the layers are opened up, hair will lack shine. And of course, as we all know, damage to the hair structure will cause split ends.

    What causes damage?

    The list is endless, but the primary causes of damage to the cuticle are:

    1: The Sun – UVA & UVB rays

    2: Salt water and Chlorine (Swimming)

    3: Windy days

    4: Central heating

    5: Electrical styling tools – dryers, straighteners, curling irons

    6: Incorrect shampoo and conditioning products

    7: Styling without using protective product

    8: Tying hair up with elastic bands

    How to prevent damage:

    Always use the correct products for your hair type, from the shampoo to the finishing product, each has a part to play in protecting the hair structure, especially against ravages of the weather and tools you use to style your hair.

    Ask your hairdresser about the best regime for maintaining your locks at home, and always invest in frequent in-salon treatments to give your hair a super boost of nourishment.
