    Blondes everywhere know that Violet and Blue shampoos can help maintain salon blonde hair for longer, keeping the tone fresh and vibrant and eliminating the chance of yellow or orange tones appearing.

    But how do they work? Let’s go back to school and art lessons where we learnt about colours and how the interact with each other by enhancing or neutralising.

    All colours have the capability of neutralising their opposites. If, for example you have green hair and wanted to neutralise it, the opposite of green is red. If you apply a red colour over green hair, you don’t get red hair, you get something neutral, depending on how light or dark the colours used are it will create a muted brown.

    When it comes to blondes, the lighter the salon colour, the paler the violet needs to be to help maintain a clean blonde, likewise, the darker the blonde is the more deeper the violet ior blue needs to be to help neutralise the unwanted tones.

    The Cortex

    This is the inner structure of your hair, protected by the cuticle (see previous blog) and it is where we find all the natural moisture and proteins that gives hair its inner strength and flexibility. The cortex is also where the majority of hair’s natural colour is, and where permanent oxidised colour sits.

    The structure of this internal element is very similar to rope, when healthy it is tightly coiled and incredibly strong.

    But just like rope, over time it can become frayed, and if the cuticle is also damaged, hair begins to suffer.

    When the cortex frays, natural moisture and proteins can escape, weakening hair, making it lifeless, lacking in volume and prone to breakage.

    If we were to continuing fraying the hair, it would resemble string, still fibrous, still coiled, but delicate and easily broken.

    Eventually, the smallest micro fibres of the hair will break down, and at this point hair needs drastic help.

    There is one more part of the hair, ‘the medulla’, not found to be present in all hair types, there are theories as to what the function of the medulla is. Sheep wool has a high medulla content and could be there to help protect against cold as it acts as a thermal layer. However in human hair it serves no purpose and could potentially be nothing more than cells that didn’t make the grade to become cuticle or cortex.

    Why does frizz happen?

    There are various reasons. Curls and waves are prone to looking frizzy because as the hair bends, the outer structure (cuticle layer) opens up and allows natural moisture to escape, two reasons in one that together can cause frizz.

    Blow drying can also cause frizz, as can a windy day! Anything that blasts air into and onto the hair structure can cause moisture to escape and the cuticle to open up.

    Humidity is another factor, the air when damp softens the cuticle layer encouraging it to open up and create that frizzy halo that occurs as the moisture escapes.

    Damaged hair is also prone to frizzing, this is due to the cuticle being broken down allowing all the hairs natural goodness to escape, encouraging frizziness and flyaways.
